A Passion for Stories and a Love of Language

Creative and playful ways to develop positive attitudes towards brilliant books, and improve communication and language in 3-4 year olds

  • To consider the importance and benefits of regular shared reading experiences with 3-4-year olds – examining the vital role which books & reading play in developing communication and language skills, and in personal, social and emotional development, as well as the long-term effects they can have on the life-chances of children.
  • To improve confidence and develop practical skills in engaging 3-4-year olds in stories, building curiosity, anticipation and enjoyment through playful, sensory or kinaesthetic activity and active participation in the telling of the story.
  • To explore practical ways of increasing the impact of story time through routines, songs and activities which help to
improve understanding, embed language and revise story structure.
  • To identify what makes a good book to use for story time, recognising key features and the potential for enhancing
communication and language development.
