Using Representations in Key Stage 1

Outline

An introduction to using representations in the key stages. Both Ofsted and the Education Endowment Foundation
have highlighted the importance of representations in underpinning children’s understanding of mathematical concepts. During this session, we explore the different types of concrete resources available for the key stage and focus on some of the main ones. By the end of the session, teachers will have a range of ideas of how to use concrete resources in the classroom.

Description

Delegates will:
  • Explore the use of manipulatives in the classroom to support the teaching of maths
  • Explore the different types of practical apparatus to support children’s mathematical thinking and making sense of maths
  • Identify how manipulatives can be used in the key stage
